I heard it's around 40 more or less … is that correct?
Only as many as required, and they make sense. Kept below 100 to 150 or the search engines may ignore the rest. Note note that the "link juice" or power of the voting page for each individual link (internal or external) is divided by the number of links in the page. The 100-150 is not an exact figure, because it also depends on the type of website where links are placed. "Hub" or "web directories" have tend to be more outgoing links 100 or even 150 per page.
