Today I thought I’d share some of my experiences ethat I’ve gained optimising websites over the past couple of years.

Now first off when it comes to building websites I hate it. I’m very lucky because I’ve got a great team around me, which  I can leverage for task I don’t enjoy.

Usually I have to get a site up very quickly and thus was only building small mini sites – about 5 pages in size.

I Love Minisites…

Let me tell you why, if built correctly you can use the minisite to bridge the gap between you and Google, Yahoo + MSN Too but Google has such a high market share if you optimise for Google It will generally work in Yahoo and MSN as well.

Great the sites up now I need to find out which keywords are the most commercially viable. So I run a small PPC campaign to find keywords that convert.

I only have a short time span because Google just doesn’t like these small 5 page sites and not before long comes the dreaded Google slap.

So to be honest in the early stages of a campaign there’s no good way to avoid it. What I’ve learned over time is to battle out the storm.

Now I have a handful of keywords which convert, it’s time to optimise.

Here’s an example of a 5 page website which is only 3 months old.

The reason you can’t guarantee rankings is because there are so many outside factors which are out of the optimizers control.

There are 2 sides of search engine optimisation on and off page, on page is optimisation of the website and off page is basically generating links back to the website.

On Page Optimisation

Optimisation of your website is the most important part of your SEO strategy, building links back to your site without first making your site SEO friendly is like mopping the floor before sweaping.

Each page on you website should have a clear and specific target or theme…

Let me explain, if your site was about t-shirts your home page would reflect that to the spiders, which will crawl the site to get you indexed.  The main place the spiders look when indexing a page is the <title> tag <meta> tags and header tags <h1> <h2> etc.

Try to make sure the keyword you would like to rank in the search engines appears in these places also scatter the keyword thoughout the content.

Off Page Optimisation

After making sure you’ve optimised the landing page it now time to get links back to the page.  The reason why links are important is because the search engine algorythm is based primairaly on a points system.  Which means the webpage with the most points is number 1 in the search engine.

So how do you get points…

If a webpage has a PR of 10 and has 10 links on the page each link will recieve a 10th of the link juice.  Now here’s another reason why you have to contiually optimise your website, because you don’t own the website the link is coming from you have little control over whether that webmaster accepts more links on his page and dilutes your link juice.

So the idea is to get as many links from as many places as you can, the more the better.

Sounds like a lot of work, it sure is.

Simply because you can spend a lot of time and money, working on ranking for these competitive keywords.  After a few months you don’t see any results or very poor results.  Its much better to go for a large number of low hanging fruit which comes in the form of long tail keyword phrases or nested keywords normally 3 to 5 words.

In the beginning 1-2 word keyword phrases are not a good idea

Let me explain

When it comes to SEO you need to look for (well at least in the beginning ) what we call nested keywords

Nested Keyword Phrases are keyword phrases where your main 1 or 2 keyword phases (you know the ones I said not to directly go after in the beginning)  are nested within a longer version of the keyword phrase.

So for example “Insurance”  or “life insurance” are the main keywords for your industry but are way to competitive to start going after and in most cases probably to broad, a nested keyword phrase would be something like:-

“Life insurance advice in London”

you see how the main keyword is nested within a longer version of the  main keyword phrase, also the nested keyword is more precise in the detail of what the person is a looking for which will make it easier to target your content more closely around what your visitor is looking for which has a knock on effect  that makes it easier to lead your visitor into your most wanted response e.g. to click and ad, fill in a form or best of all buy your solution to there problem.

When doing your keyword research you need to also focus on related keyword or synonyms

For example life insurance is related to life cover

So you need a keyword list that has both nested and related keywords that you drill down into, to find more nested keywords that you can work with in a up and coming post I will talk about using keyword research tools to make your keyword development a breeze.

Another thing to consider at the beginning stages of building your keyword list is your market depth.

Is you site going be an authority on every thing related to your market/industry or is it going specialize on a particular topic within your market.

Taking some time to consider what goals you have for your site and deciding who exactly you are targeting  with your keywords, will give you a great insight on how wide or narrow your keyword list needs to go.

I would go as far to say that your doomed if you don’t take some time and write down your goals be very clear and concise with what it is you want your site to achieve the more precise  you are with your site goals the easier it will be to reverse engineer your plan to accomplish these goals
